Booking choice: The Reality Tours walk, from $20 per person. Check dates Tour details
GetYourGuide alone lists more than thirty Dharavi tours. Most are two to three-hour walks through the same mix of recycling units, potteries, leather shops and homes. What changes is who runs them, where the money goes, whether you can take photos and what else is added on.
We have grouped them into four types and picked the strongest listing in each. From-prices are in USD for 2026 and move with the date and option.
The quick answer
For most first-time visitors, Reality Tours is the safe pick: the original operator, groups of six at most, no cameras, and 80% of post-tax profits to its own NGO, from about $20. On a tight budget, the resident-guide walks start at a few dollars. If you have one morning for the city, take the local-train combo with Dhobi Ghat and the dabbawalas. Private walks cost more but run on your schedule.

What are the main kinds of Dharavi tour?
Four: the Reality Tours walk, walks with resident guides, combos with Dhobi Ghat and the dabbawalas, and private tours.
Our shortlist, by type:
| Tour | Type | From (2026) | Length | Starts | Photos |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reality Tours walk | The original | $20 | 2.5 to 3.5 h | Mahim or Churchgate station | No cameras |
| Local-guide walk | Resident guide | $5 | 2 to 7 h | Varies by option | Listing does not say |
| Dharavi and Dhobi Ghat | Resident guide, combo | $3 | 3 h | In Dharavi | Listing does not say |
| Slumdog Millionaire walk | Resident guide | $11 | 1.5 to 3 h | In Dharavi | Not at most places |
| Walk with a female guide | Woman guide | $7 | 2 to 4 h | Pickup on some options | Listing does not say |
| Dharavi by local train | Combo | $16 | 3 to 4.5 h | Churchgate station | Not inside Dharavi |
| Dabbawala lunchbox tour | Combo | $16 | 3.5 h | A Burger King meeting point | Camera on the bring list |
| Private Reality Tours walk | Private | $76 | 2.5 to 3.5 h | Mahim, or hotel transfer | No cameras |
Not sure which type? Start with the original: groups of six and a strict no-camera rule.
Check dates for the Reality Tours walkIs Reality Tours the best Dharavi tour?
For most first-timers, yes. It is the oldest operator, the groups are small, the money trail is public, and the no-camera rule keeps the walk respectful.
Chris Way and Krishna Pujari founded Reality Tours & Travel in 2005. Its Dharavi walk won the TO DO! Award for socially responsible tourism in 2014 and topped Tripadvisor's India experiences in 2019. The company says 80% of post-tax profits from all tours go to its NGO, Reality Gives, which runs English and computer classes in Dharavi.
The walk itself covers recycling, the potters of Kumbharwada, leather, a bakery, soap-making and papad, with residential lanes and the Reality Gives centre when it is open. Booked direct, a shared tour costs INR 1,600 to 1,850 per person (realitytoursandtravel.com); the GetYourGuide listing starts from about $20. The downside: you leave with no photos of your own, and it costs several times more than a resident-guide walk.

The walk that started Dharavi tourism: recycling, pottery and the lanes in a group of six, cameras left behind.
Explore the Reality Tours walk Tour detailsAre walks with resident guides better?
They can be. You pay less, and your guide grew up in the lanes. The trade-off is less public information about the operator and looser photo rules.
Inside Mumbai Tours' Dharavi and Dhobi Ghat walk is led by guides who say they live in Dharavi, and adds the open-air laundry, from about $3. Guests name their guides in nearly every review: "A fantastic tour. Our guide, Mohammad, took us to places we would not have been able to visit without him." Amaze Tours' Slumdog Millionaire walk (from about $11) ends at a pottery, with an optional vegetarian meal in a family home.
The local-guide walk is the cheapest broad option at about $5. Its operator is not named on the listing data we could see, and the listing offers several options from 2 to 7 hours, some private, some with pickup. Read the option text at checkout before you pay.
A guide who lives in Dharavi, the leather and recycling trades, then Dhobi Ghat, from a few dollars.
Check dates for Dharavi and Dhobi GhatWhich tours add Dhobi Ghat and the dabbawalas?
Amaze Tours' local-train tour does all three. Cityscape Mumbai Tours adds a meal and transport. The resident-guide walk adds Dhobi Ghat only.
Dharavi by local train starts at Churchgate, rides the suburban train to Dharavi, walks for about 100 minutes, steps inside Dhobi Ghat and ends with the dabbawalas near Churchgate. The dabbawala lunchbox tour runs the same three stops in 3.5 hours with local transport and a meal included. The full comparison, with Sunday rules, is in the Dharavi and Dhobi Ghat guide.

Should you book a private Dharavi tour?
If you are a family, a couple who want to set the pace, or a group of three or more, private is worth pricing. For one person it costs a lot more.
The private Reality Tours walk starts from about $76 on GetYourGuide, with a hotel transfer option. Reality Tours' own private prices fall steeply with group size, from INR 7,050 for one person to INR 1,600 each for six:
| Group size | Private, per person (direct) | Shared, per person (direct) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | INR 7,050 | INR 1,850 |
| 2 | INR 3,850 | INR 1,850 |
| 3 | INR 2,750 | INR 1,650 |
| 4 | INR 2,150 | INR 1,600 |
| 6 | INR 1,600 | INR 1,600 |

Reality Tours bans cameras. Amaze Tours forbids photos inside Dharavi. Others leave it to the guide, so ask before you raise a phone.
- Reality Tours: strict no-camera rule to protect residents' privacy; a link to the company's photos follows by email.
- Amaze Tours, local train tour: photography is not allowed inside Dharavi but is allowed elsewhere on the route.
- Amaze Tours, Slumdog Millionaire walk: photos and video are not permitted at most places.
- Cityscape Mumbai Tours: a camera is on the listing's bring list; ask the guide where it is welcome.
- Treks and Trails (booked direct): cameras generally allowed with permission, per its tour page.
If photos matter to you, book a tour that allows them rather than testing the rule. Why the bans exist is covered in our ethics guide.

Where do Dharavi tours start?
Mahim station (west side) and Churchgate for Reality Tours, Churchgate for the train tour, and points inside Dharavi for most resident-guide walks.
Reality Tours meets at the main entrance and ticket office on the west side of Mahim station at 10:00 or 14:30 for shared tours, or at Churchgate station at 09:15 or 13:45, opposite the ticket counter. From Colaba, Churchgate is a 15 to 20-minute walk; Mahim is about 45 minutes by slow train. The operator warns that auto-rickshaws cannot reach Mahim from the south of the city.
The resident-guide walks mostly meet in Dharavi on the Mahim side; the exact spot comes with your booking. Since 2025 the Aqua Line metro has had a Dharavi station, with direct trains from the airport terminals and from Churchgate. More in our metro post.
Meet at Churchgate, ride the local train, walk Dharavi and see Dhobi Ghat in one morning.
