Diwali is the one week of the year when Dharavi's potters cannot make enough. Kumbharwada, the potters' quarter, sells clay lamps (diyas) across Mumbai, and in October the lanes there fill with drying lamps and kiln smoke.
The festival also sets the rhythm of the winter season for visitors. Below: the 2026 dates, what changes for walks over the long weekend, the weather from November to February, and the other dates worth knowing before you book.
The quick answer
Lakshmi Puja, the main night of Diwali, is on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on 6 November and the Maharashtra holidays of Balipratipada and Bhaubeej on 10 and 11 November. Visit Kumbharwada in late October or early November to see diya-making at its peak. Dabbawala tours are affected around Diwali and on public holidays. November to February is the dry season, with highs of 31 to 35°C, almost no rain, and hazy air on some days.
When is Diwali 2026 in Mumbai?
Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhaubeej on 11 November.
Maharashtra's 2026 holiday list gives Diwali Amavasya (Lakshmi Pujan) on Sunday 8 November, Balipratipada on Tuesday 10 November, and Bhaubeej on Wednesday 11 November as an extra holiday this year. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, per Dekho Panchang. In Mumbai the evening puja window on 8 November is about 6:19 to 7:45 pm, per the same calendar.
Monday 9 November is a working day between the holidays, though many people will take it off to bridge the break.
| Date | Day | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 6 Nov 2026 | Dhanteras | Day of buying metal and new things; markets busy |
| Sun 8 Nov 2026 | Lakshmi Puja | Main night: lamps, puja, fireworks (public holiday) |
| Mon 9 Nov 2026 | Working day | Between the holidays |
| Tue 10 Nov 2026 | Balipratipada (Padwa) | Public holiday in Maharashtra |
| Wed 11 Nov 2026 | Bhaubeej | Sisters and brothers; extra state holiday in 2026 |
What happens in Kumbharwada before Diwali?
The potters make diyas by the thousand. Each potter makes roughly 2,000 to 2,500 in the Diwali period, by one estimate.
Kumbharwada was settled by Gujarati potter families from Saurashtra, and the trade is still run from family homes along a few lanes. A 2021 feature in Homegrown counted about 800 diya-makers working 10 to 12-hour days before the festival, with men shaping lamps on the wheel and women painting and packing them. Batches of around 1,500 go into kilns outside the houses. Small diyas sold wholesale for about Rs 2 and large ones for Rs 5 at the time.
The kilns run on waste: cardboard, sawdust and offcuts from Dharavi's garment units, fired for five to six hours, per the Pulitzer Center. The smoke is part of the scene and a real health cost for the families who breathe it every day.
The best time to see it is the two or three weeks before 8 November. The Reality Tours walk includes Kumbharwada, and the Slumdog Millionaire walk ends at a pottery. Buying a box of diyas from a potter is a fine way to spend money that stays in Dharavi. Keep out of the way of anyone carrying a tray to the kiln.

Do the dabbawalas work over Diwali?
Not on the main days. Amaze Tours' listing says the dabbawalas take leave around Diwali and do not operate on Sundays or public holidays.
This matters if you want to see the lunchbox carriers. Amaze Tours' train tour and the dabbawala lunchbox tour both include them, and the train tour's listing warns that the dabbawalas do not work on Sundays or public holidays and take leave around Diwali. With 8 November on a Sunday and 10 and 11 November as holidays, the whole week of 6 to 11 November is a poor bet for this part of the tour.
The dabbawalas also take a longer break each spring, when they return to their villages near Pune for the annual jatra. In 2026 that ran from 30 March to 4 April, per The Week. Book a dabbawala tour for a weekday at least a week clear of Diwali and check the listing's notes before you pay. More in our guide to Dhobi Ghat and the dabbawalas.

Dry and warm. Average highs run from about 35°C in November to 31°C in January, with almost no rain after mid November.
This is Mumbai's best walking season. The monsoon has gone, the lanes are dry, and nights cool off. Mornings are the pick: a 9 or 10 am start avoids the midday heat in the tight lanes, where there is little breeze. Bring water, a hat and closed shoes.
The catch is the air. Winter brings slower winds, and haze builds up, as the Free Press Journal has reported in past winters, with traffic and construction dust the main causes. The nights around Diwali add fireworks smoke on top. If you have asthma, check the day's AQI and carry what you need; kiln smoke in Kumbharwada adds to it.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 34.5 / 26.2°C | 11 mm | Warmest of the season; Diwali smoke |
| December | 32.3 / 24.0°C | 1.6 mm | Pleasant; Christmas crowds in the city |
| January | 31.2 / 19.8°C | 0.2 mm | Coolest mornings; early haze |
| February | 31.7 / 23.2°C | 0.2 mm | Dry; haze can build |
Which festival dates matter for Dharavi walks this winter?
Diwali (6 to 11 November), Guru Nanak Jayanti (24 November), Christmas, Makar Sankranti in mid January, Republic Day (26 January) and the start of Ramadan around 8 February 2027.
Dharavi has Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist communities living lane by lane, so the festival calendar is full. Public holidays affect the dabbawalas and some workshops; religious festivals change the mood of a walk more than the route. The Urs at Mahim Dargah, the shrine just west of Dharavi, takes place in December, with a ten-day fair and processions. We could not find the 2026 dates when we wrote this.
Makar Sankranti brings kite flying from the rooftops. Ramadan's start depends on the moon; Gulf News expects it around 8 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around 10 March. During Ramadan, food lanes in Muslim areas come alive after sunset, after most tours have finished.
| Date | Festival | What it means for a walk |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 11 Nov 2026 | Diwali | Lights and diyas; dabbawalas on leave; some units closed |
| Tue 24 Nov 2026 | Guru Nanak Jayanti | Public holiday; no dabbawalas |
| December (dates TBC) | Mahim Dargah Urs | Fair and crowds near Mahim station |
| Fri 25 Dec 2026 | Christmas | Public holiday; churches decorated |
| 14 or 15 Jan 2027 | Makar Sankranti | Kites over the rooftops |
| Tue 26 Jan 2027 | Republic Day | National holiday; no dabbawalas |
| About 8 Feb 2027 | Ramadan begins | Evening food lanes; daytime quieter |
What changes for tours over Diwali and the winter?
More demand, fewer working dabbawalas, and some workshops pausing on the main festival days. Book a week or two ahead and avoid 8 to 11 November for a full working tour.
November to February is peak season for foreign visitors to Mumbai, and walks with small groups fill first. Reality Tours caps groups at six, per its tour page. Book a week or two ahead for December and January weekends; free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes early booking low-risk.
Over Diwali itself, expect a quieter, more domestic Dharavi. Many units are family businesses, and the listings do not say which ones keep working on 8, 10 and 11 November. If seeing recycling, leather and bakeries at full tilt is the point, pick a date in late October, early November or after 12 November. Most walks finish by late afternoon (Reality Tours' afternoon walk ends around 5 pm), before the lamps are lit, so see the lights on your own in the evening. The redevelopment is moving fast too; see our October 2026 news post for what has changed in Sector 6.
